CFFC wins food insecurity grant from Takoma Park City
We’ve just been told that Takoma Park’s city council approved us for more than $14,000 in grant funding at the council meeting on Wednesday.
The money comes from the city’s food insecurity reduction program and we’ll be using it to expand the number of free workshops we run, increase the amount of food we grow, and expand the number of people we reach.
This is the second grant the city has awarded the Community Food Forest Collective this year. Over the summer, we were approved for a grant that will allow us to continue funding the after school garden club at Takoma Park Elementary School while also launching a new nature club that will get even more kids outside. This is all part of a broader effort to integrate the mini food forest into the school’s curriculum so that teachers can use the outdoor space as a living classroom.
We’re deeply grateful to the city for all their generous support. We simply couldn’t do any of this without them.
And in other news, we’re also working on an Environmental Protection Agency grant that will see us partner with CHEER to expand the number of edible gardens and food forests in the area. The grant supports groups that are focused on tackling environmental injustice. All of the sites we are looking at are in underserved communities - places where people need access to fresh, nutritious food the most.
